Literacy Aotearoa is a charitable trust with its support office in Auckland.  The purpose of the Trust is to raise adult literacy and numeracy capabilities across Aotearoa New Zealand so learners are able to realise their full potential.

Literacy Aotearoa honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi and guides everything we do. By way of example we have a Māori and Tauiwi governance model, with Ngā Kaiwhakahaere (Co-chairpersons) representing each. Literacy Aotearoa operates in accordance with the Māori version of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Programmes and services are student-centred, at no cost to the learner and delivered from over 40 locations, nationwide, with over 8000 learners per year.

With revenue of a projected $14m, Literacy Aotearoa is an important purpose-led entity that continues to honour the vision of the two women who founded it in 1974 – to ensure every adults’ right to read and write.

Constitutional review

Following a constitutional review in 2018, Literacy Aotearoa transitioned from an Incorporated Society to a Trust and from an entity centred on membership to one with increased relevance to our learners using new delivery models.  Literacy Aotearoa is focussed on appointing leaders with strategic skills, experience and ideas who can collectively provide future-focused governance.

The governing body is known as Te Kōruru.

Te Kōruru is seeking to appoint four new trustees

Literacy Aotearoa is looking to initially appointment four new trustees by Pipiri (June) this year and another four by 30 Pipiri (June) 2020.  Some existing trustees may seek reappointment. Candidates with knowledge and expertise from the community sector and with a range of professional and commercial expertise to provide stewardship over the next phase of growth should apply. The Trust needs to significantly increase its reach and impact with Māori and Pasifika learners, and the new trustees will reflect this need.  The Trust deed requires three trustees to have a background in community learning.

Leadership

Due to retirement/rotation, two of the incoming trustees may be required to take over Ngā Kaiwhakahaere (Co-chairpersons) roles in 2019.

Commitment required

The term is three years, with the possibility of reappointment – subject to effective performance – up to a maximum of three terms. The terms of all four continuing trustees end on 30 Pipiri (June) 2020.

The Trustees are expected to contribute 10 days per year, which includes five meetings (usually, but not always in Auckland), the AGM, subcommittees, teleconferences and stakeholder events.

Geographic considerations

To ensure regional connection is maintained, it would be desirable for one of the new trustees to live in Te Waipounamu (South Island).

Fee

The trustees currently receive $4800 per annum (Ngā Kaiwhakahaere – $5800 pa). Travel and other expenses are arranged by the National Office.

Skills and experience we are seeking include:

  • Commitment to the kaupapa and mission
  • Te reo Māori me ngā tikanga
  • Relationships with Iwi and a diverse range of Māori organisations and communities
  • Upholding and promoting Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Strong networks in government and an understanding of operating and influencing in a government environment
  • Chartered accountant or similar with a high level of financial literacy
  • Senior management experience and understanding
  • Strong track record in systems, controls and assurance
  • An education background ideally understanding the context of adult learning and tertiary education
  • Understanding our role and connection with government policy
  • Business development and marketing experience to increase reach and relevance
  • Strategic acumen to build resilience in an uncertain future
  • Change management experience on how to create a learner-centric culture.
