Job Description

Team Leader Claimant Support, Permanent, Full time, Wellington

A rare chance to lead a high-performing team working with claimants of abuse and neglect in State care. The team is the public face of the Historic Claims group, supporting claimants through the claims process.

  • Newly established role leading a team focused on high quality customer service
  • Highly culturally competent – Te Reo me ona tikanga Māori
  • Innovative Ministry, experiencing transformative, cultural changes

About the Historic Claims Group

MSD is responsible for the Historic Claims process.  The Historic Claims team work with people who have been abused in State care, in particular the care of Child, Youth and Family and its predecessors, to address their concerns without them needing to resort to civil litigation.

MSD recently reviewed the way the historic claims process worked, carrying out a robust and far reaching consultation with current and previous claimants and key stakeholders. This has resulted in a commitment to growing and adjusting the Historic Claims team with a focus on operating within the principles of Tikanga Māori; Mana, Aroha, Whakapapa, Whānaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Pono.

We are now recruiting the core members of the team.  This team will be made up of highly culturally-responsive people who are specialists in their field.

About the role

The Team Leader Claimant Support leads a high performing team of claimant support specialists who are the primary point of contact for claimants as they work through the claims process.  The team provides end to end support, from initial point of contact through to closure of the claim. Specifically the team helps claimants to provide information about their experience in care, answer any questions the claimant may have to help them understand what happened when they were in care and to ensure claimants have the support they need as they work through the claims process. This position is a part of a wider operational management group working collaboratively to achieve the best possible outcome for claimants.

Critical to this role is a focus on team wellbeing and ongoing support in an often challenging environment.

Skills competencies and experience for the position include:

  • Experience in leading a team with a focus on providing support/help to the public, ideally working with sensitive and potentially uncomfortable information
  • Significant experience working with individuals affected by multiple issues, including domestic violence and child abuse
  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of people who were harmed as a result of abuse or neglect while in care, custody or guardianship
  • An established record of operating, influencing and providing advice as the leader of a team
  • Experience in providing support and pastoral care to staff
  • Understanding of leading and motivating people through change
  • Demonstrated evidence of a commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and the development of a service that is culturally responsive and incorporates tikanga Māori.

If this sounds like you, please apply!

The remuneration band for this position is from $95,252 to $119,065 based on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

  • We are expecting to hold interviews between 12 and 13 February.
