The department is part of the Faculty of Engineering and takes in approximately 280 undergraduates each year and has approximately 200 post graduates in total. Technicians working for us generally support teaching and research and they have a varied and interesting range of activities in their work.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for the fixed term position (12 months) of Technician in the Structures Testing Laboratory (STL) on the Newmarket Campus.  The STL is a 600 m2 facility used for investigating the response of structures and materials under various loading scenarios, with a strong focus on earthquakes, but also investigating wind and gravity loading.  The STL has a 200 m2 large scale testing area, two shake tables, materials testing area, as well as steel, timber, and concrete fabrication workshops.  The STL is used by over 11 academic staff, 60 PhD students, and 80 undergraduate students to test the performance of a wide range of materials and structural configurations.  The results of the work performed in the STL are used to inform building standards, industry guidelines, and product development.

He kōrero mōu | About you

The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting with the general operation and maintenance of the laboratory, providing technical assistance to staff and students, and maintaining high levels of safety. Technical assistance includes specimen construction and preparation for testing, and as such skills related to fitting, turning, welding, carpentry, or concrete placement are desirable.  Knowledge of electronic data acquisition, transducers, hydraulics including pumps, actuators and servo-controlled systems, or the ability to carry out a simple mechanical or structural design would be beneficial but are not essential. Desirable qualifications include a trade certificate, NZCE qualification, or experience in the above fields.
