The Senior Policy Officer (SPO) positions require you to be able to get up to speed on new developments and issues very quickly then provide analysis and recommendations.  The role also requires the ability to manage regular, short-term urgent responses along with your medium or long-term priorities.  The role will see you supporting the coaching and mentoring of entry level Policy and Development Officers across the division.

The Development Managers (DM) are primarily responsible for managing the effective delivery of financial assistance for development outcomes in accordance with the Government’s priorities and mandates and aid effectiveness principles.  DM’s will be required to travel periodically, including to developing countries where duties may include mentoring, donor coordination, managing relationships and facilitating programme development and delivery.

Across both functions there are opportunities to travel and serve abroad in the diplomatic service.

Your ability to think strategically and see linkage between different streams of work is required as you work broadly across the organisation, supporting both strategic intent, and programmes of work.  You will already be well networked and have the mana to build and extend on strategic partnerships, both with external stakeholder’s and within the organisation.

You will be responsible for developing and delivering robust policy advice and leading complex multi sector issues.  You will identify and recommend processes for resolving problems, and exhibit strong leadership within the division on projects that advance the division’s objectives.   As such, your ability to demonstrate expertise in policy prioritisation, and utilising key stakeholder relationships to influence decision-makers, policy-makers and thinkers to advance the division’s objectives will be valued.  Promoting high standards in the quality of your work outputs, you will foster a culture of learning, sharing of experiences and encourage robust discussion.

Your career may be honed working within a Government, Pacific, Iwi/Hapū or NGO organisation in a senior advisory, leadership or high level policy/project management capacity.  Although there are baseline ‘must haves’ required for the positions ie; New Zealand Citizenship; the ability to be security cleared; and a relevant tertiary qualification, we actively encourage candidates who have the transferable skill sets, life experiences, specialist skills (such as languages) alongside a broad, senior skill set to apply.

An awareness of the affinity for the needs and aspirations of Māori and a commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are pre-requisite.  In addition, Te Reo me ona tikanga Māori, or the ability to speak another language, such as a Pacific or Asian language, would be highly advantageous.
