Full-Time Research Programme Manager
Research Programme Manager
Applications are invited for the position of Research Programme Manager in the Faculty of Engineering. This is a permanent full time position reporting to the faculty’s Research Services Manager and for the initial 5 year period, the role will specifically be supporting an MBIE funded programme entitled “Development of IPT roadway charging systems”.
Responsibilities will include managing a multi-disciplinary team focused on the development of a new roadway system incorporating wireless power transfer to electric vehicles (EVs). The programme is led from the power electronics group in engineering which is recognised as world leading in the development of resonant inductive power transfer systems for applications ranging from biomedical to industrial, consumer electronics and electric transportation. This research has been taken up with leading industry globally, including Daifuku (in materials handling and clean factory automation), Qualcomm-Halo (in the development of wireless charging of transportation systems), Apple (for charging of consumer electronics) and I PT-Technology (in materials handling and bus charging applications).
The NZ government has recently recognised the critical importance that wireless power brings to the uptake of electric vehicles and the associated benefits that accrue as a consequence, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved urban air quality. They have provided substantial funding over a 5 year period to enable a large multidisciplinary team to work together to develop robust roadway-charging systems for EVs, enabling vehicles to pick up charge from the roadway itself, when they are parked, stopped at the lights, or moving along a special charging lane. The team comprises experts from the power electronics IPT research group, the Centre for Advanced Composite Materials, transportation research and economics at the University of Auckland together with Materials engineering at GNS and Victoria University in Wellington. The research includes international connections with other academic institutions such as the Utah State University, and our industry partners.
The successful applicant will work in the Newmarket Innovation Precinct alongside the programme leadership team and manage the programme and the relationships of the research team, collaborators and the external stakeholders. They will work with university research support staff, Uniservices and MBIE to ensure successful delivery of the programme. Preferably they will have a technical background in engineering, and will have worked alongside engineering teams at a similar level. They will need excellent communication skills to help develop inter-disciplinary research collaborations with academics and industry, both nationally and internationally. They will help create a team atmosphere across multiple faculties and institutions, and help support postgraduate students and the leadership team. They should be comfortable with engaging across the various stakeholders. Specifically; industry, government and lwi.
