Job Description

Professor/Associate Professor in Law, AUT Law School

  • Teach, research, lead and collaborate
  • Join AUT’s dynamic and diverse Law School
  • Permanent, full-time appointment based at AUT’s City Campus

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is vibrant, achievement-oriented and a rewarding place to work. Ranked in the top 250 of world universities, it is also one of the world’s top 40 young universities and #1 for global research impact in Australasia. We are poised for the next stage of growth and offer a stimulating teaching and research environment with strong connections to the profession, judiciary, government and business. AUT has close to 30,000 students and around 3,000 staff across our three teaching campuses and is located in New Zealand’s (NZ’s) largest city, Auckland – consistently ranked as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

AUT’s Law School is New Zealand’s newest and arguably, its most contemporary – blending traditional legal education and focus on legal theory with a strong practical application. AUT law graduates are highly sought after by law firms, business, community organisations and other employers. Over its first decade it has significantly grown in size and stature. The Law School is part of AUT’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. We have over 25 committed and passionate staff who are dedicated to providing an excellent student experience for our incredibly diverse student community, whilst maintaining a focus on high-quality research that has genuine impact and makes significant ongoing contributions to New Zealand’s policies and legal frameworks.  We focus on high quality, innovative teaching with authentic practice-based assessment which prepares our graduates for the workplace and provides opportunities for postgraduate study. As a School, we are an open, collegial group and support the growth of our people. We teach at both AUT’s City and South campuses.

Teach, research, lead and collaborate in the field of Law

This is an exciting opportunity for a forward-thinking Professor or Associate Professor of Law with expertise in one (or more) of the following legal areas: Contract, Torts, Public Law, Criminal Law and / or Trusts, or Tikanga Māori. We are seeking interest from active academic citizens interested in taking leading roles supporting the school’s vision for an academically excellent, but practical, legal education that maximises the opportunities for our graduates to make an impact in their future careers.

You will embrace service and leadership opportunities, be hugely involved in school life and be reflective and sensitive to the needs of our particularly diverse student community. You will enjoy helping to mentor more junior staff and work with a truly collaborative approach, developing strong working relationships with colleagues, students and the community – people will know who you are and what you stand for. You will be expected to publish actively in your specialised field; research is well supported within the School and the Faculty also offers a variety of contestable research funds.  Teaching and Learning is also prioritised at AUT and we value excellent educators who approach the classroom with an innovative, inclusive and student-centred approach. Aligned with your research focus, you’ll teach and lead across programmes and courses, and supervise postgraduate research, as agreed with the Dean of Law. The School has an upcoming curriculum review, and your contributions to course and curriculum development will evidence a continuous-improvement focus.

You will be recognised nationally and internationally as a leading scholar in your academic field, who displays attributes of tolerance, empathy, trustworthiness, confidence and kindness. Your ability to listen, connect, collaborate, communicate and influence will be critical – as is your level of strong respect for others coupled with an open and engaging attitude that is flexible to changing requirements. You will enhance the positive energy within AUT, value diversity and work inclusively. A resolute, robust and positive attitude is essential!
