Job Description

Professor in Data Science

  • Teach, research, lead and collaborate
  • Lead our computing disciplines in interdisciplinary analytics initiatives
  • Join AUT’s dynamic School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is vibrant, achievement-oriented and a rewarding place to work. Ranked in the top 250 of world universities, it is also one of the world’s top 40 young universities and #1 for global research impact in Australasia. We’re poised for the next stage of growth and offer a stimulating teaching and research environment with strong connections to government, business and industry. AUT has close to 30,000 students and around 3,000 staff across our three teaching campuses and is located in New Zealand’s (NZ’s) largest city, Auckland – consistently ranked as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

Our Computer Science and Software Engineering department (CSSE) is part of AUT’s large, unique, dynamic and interdisciplinary School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (ECMS). The department constitutes world-leading research expertise in AI/Machine Learning, Networks and Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, and Information Systems, with special emphasis on the discovery and application of knowledge. Data Science has been an area of strength where we are expecting significant growth in our programmes and courses. Industry and academic interest in this area is high and is expected to continue to rise, our new Data Science major is part of our BCIS degree and we are looking to expand to postgraduate offerings in the near future. We host the Data Science Research Group, whom along with other colleagues within the school have active research projects with a range of external stakeholders in the area.

This is an exciting opportunity for a forward-thinking Professor of Data Science with expertise in at least two of the following data science related areas – large databases and data warehousing, artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning or data visualisation.

Recognising the growth and increasing significance of data across a wealth of disciplines, AUT is looking at pan-university collaboration in analytics as a strategic direction. The appointee would be expected to take a leading role in representing the computing disciplines in these interdisciplinary initiatives. As we continue to grow our programmes, there are also opportunities to guide course development and build interdisciplinary linkages and models.

Other key focus areas include:

  1. Providing leadership to the Data Science theme, including securing external research grants and leading teams of colleagues and students to achieve high-quality research outcomes (grants, publications).
  2. Providing leadership to the planning and delivery of applied, innovative and theoretically underpinned Data Science curricula, which would include collaboratively working with internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Providing leadership to develop the department’s profile both internally and externally for its strengths and innovations in Data Science research and teaching.

You will be recognised as a senior academic who displays attributes of tolerance, empathy, trustworthiness, confidence and kindness. Your ability to listen, connect, collaborate, communicate and influence will be critical – as is your level of strong respect for others coupled with an open and engaging attitude that is flexible to changing requirements. You’ll enhance the positive energy within AUT, value diversity and work inclusively. A resolute, robust and positive attitude is essential.

NOTE: The School of ECMS is also currently advertising for a Head of Department and Professor of Mechanical Engineering to further bolster its academic leadership, click HERE for further information.
