Product Owner – Teaching & Learning

The Team

IT Services is responsible for the delivery of central applications and infrastructure to support staff, students and the community of The University of Auckland. It plays a key role in ensuring the core IT Infrastructure and systems of the University are reliable and secure and carries a mission to provide effective IT Services that enhance the reputation of the University through innovation and collaboration.

Teaching and Learning are responsible for developing the Teaching and Learning environment for Students and Staff. With constant change in higher education and lifelong learning, the Teaching and Learning team play and integral part in exploring and seeking further ways to engage with students in the campus based learning experience.

To enable the high levels of service provided by Teaching & Learning, they use an extensive product portfolio and manage this with the assistance of IT Services. An opportunity has now arisen for an experienced Product Owner to join the Teaching & Learning team and help oversee the Learning Management System (Canvas) and its related product portfolio.

The Role

The Product owner for Teaching & Learning is responsible for delivering product value by working with stakeholders to understand their needs and developing a vision and a product backlog that aims to achieve that vision. As an integral technology leader, the Product Owner is the go to person for product information and they ultimately represent the customer and stakeholder interests in the product to the delivery team, and have the authority and accountability for product decisions on a day-to-day basis.

The Product Owner communicates delivery progress, organises product showcases, facilitates community sessions and negotiates priorities, scope, funding and schedules. Some other key responsibilities include:

  • Leadership and responsibility in justifying business need, defining user stories and acceptance criteria, creation and curation of product backlog and taking an active part in customer testing.
  • Strategy and planning related to product vision for portfolio including market options, stakeholder needs, product road map and co-ordination of releases and launches.
  • Build strong relationships and actively engage with the user community through things such as forums and groups in addition to building strong relationships across ITS and the wider University.
  • Contributing to ongoing development and continuous improvement through seeking feedback and input to the most appropriate outcomes.

Our Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will exhibit an in-depth knowledge and understanding of IT services and Product Management in complex organisations. A strong interest in educational technology, teaching and pedagogical concepts is highly desirable. They will need to demonstrate proven relationship management strengths, with clear evidence of an ability to build successful business partnerships and drive strategic direction and effective product backlogs. With no direct reports but a large emphasis on leadership, these unique roles require strong skills in influencing and driving collaboration. High-level communication ability is essential, with verbal, written and interpersonal skills integral to success in this role.

In addition, the successful applicants will possess strong analytical ability coupled with an innovative and creative thinking style and robust business and technology acumen.

Experience within an AGILE environment is favourable.  Experience within the tertiary sector working with products related to Teaching & Learning would be advantageous.
