About the role

As our Private Session Facilitator, you will support Commissioners to hear the experiences of survivors through confidential and private face-to-face meetings and gather additional accounts through written submission processes.

This is an exciting and career enhancing opportunity to work in a team aiming to make a difference for future generations of New Zealanders. Your responsibilities will include supporting Commissioners to conduct private sessions with survivors by participating in a note taking capacity, collaborate with the Contact and Support team to ensure the wellbeing and other needs of all session participants are being met appropriately and work closely with the Survivor Accounts Directorate to ensure a coordinated and informed approach across the four core functions: community engagement, contact and support, private sessions and counselling.

What will you bring?

Our environment is challenging and fast paced, so first and foremost you will need to be resilient, and possess the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • Experience of listening to sensitive information in a confidential listening environment
  • Demonstrated excellent organisational, information management and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of privacy, confidentiality and information security principles
  • Confident in culturally and disability inclusive approaches including tikanga Māori
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma informed approaches
  • Availability to travel throughout New Zealand
  • A legal, policy or research background is advantageous

It is desirable that you have all or some of the following:

  • Confidence in cultural practices and disability inclusive approaches
  • Show knowledge that is consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • A demonstrated understanding of trauma informed approaches

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions is investigating the abuse and neglect of children, young people and vulnerable adults who were in the care of state and faith-based institutions in New Zealand between 1950 and 1999 and will make recommendations aimed at stopping this happening in the future.
