Tēnei tūranga – About the role

A newly created opportunity has arisen within the Māori Partnerships and Capability (DMPaC) of Immigration New Zealand (INZ) as a Principal Advisor.

The Principal Advisor will be a trusted advisor to the Director of Māori Partnerships and Capability and to the extended INZ leadership team.  This role will support colleagues across INZ in successfully delivering priority work with a particular focus on genuine partnership with Māori to ensure that INZ is well positioned to deliver partnership responsibilities with Māori under Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi.

This role will require significant expertise and perspective regarding Iwi and Māori related matters.  You will bring both your leadership experience of developing individuals and teams and of providing high level strategic advice.

This is a highly collaborative and influential role that will need to actively build and maintain relationships with INZ leaders and external stakeholders.

  • Expert understanding of Crown responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the aspirations and needs of Māori
  • Demonstrated experience of advancing both Crown aspirations and the aspirations of Māori under Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Leadership experience of developing individuals and teams
  • A proven track record of experience and achievement in working with leadership teams and providing high level strategic advice in a complex environment
  • Proven experience working in a policy and/or service delivery agency where partnership with Māori communities, Iwi, Hapu and key Māori organisations are prioritised
  • An ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with a wide range of people at all levels, both internal and external to MBIE
  • Strong systems thinking skills, able to quickly develop an understanding of context in relation to the insights required and provide strategic advice
  • An understanding of Kaupapa Maori models and Matauranga Maori
  • Confident with Te Reo Māori me on tikanga – take part in general conversation with speakers of Te Reo Māori, be comfortable in marae and/or other Te Ao Māori environments
  • A strategic thinker, politically aware, able to operate as a credible and trusted strategic advisor to the DMPaC and other senior leaders
  • Able to successfully establish and maintain relationships with high-level stakeholders inside and outside government
  • An understanding of the New Zealand immigration system
