Pou Ārahi Māori: Te Mahau – Te Tai Runga (Te Waipounamu)

E karanga ana ki ngā tono tūranga mahi a ngā mātanga, ngā pūkenga, ngā kaiārahi Māori rānei e kōingo ana ki te whakahāngai tika i te pūnaha mātauranga ki ā tātou tamariki mokopuna puta noa, ā, he whakatutuki hoki i te whakamaunga atu o te kōrero, “Poiapoia ngā mokopuna ngā rangatira mō āpōpō” – Tihei mauri ora!

Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga is seeking applications from exceptionally skilled and experienced Māori leaders who want to make a difference to the future of education for our mokopuna. You will provide direction and strategic leadership to Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga and to the leadership team of your respective group. You will also be a part of a Pou Ārahi Māori collective of nine senior Māori leaders working across the organisation to transform Te Tāhuhu and lift educational outcomes for Māori.

Our collective Māori leadership approach has not been seen before in our sector. Together you will support Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga and Te Mahau to transform the way we do things to deliver excellent and equitable education outcomes.

You will be tasked with lifting cultural capability, modelling new ways of working and supporting Te Tāhuhu and Te Mahau to honour and give practical effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Mō tēnei tūranga – About this role

ThePou Ārahi Māori Te Tai Runga (South), will have a key leadership role, supporting and sustaining long-term relationships with whānau, hapū and iwi and Māori organisations, involved in education. This will mean creating space for Māori to exercise rangatiratanga, and, exercising kāwanatanga in good faith to actively protect Māori education interests.

Collectively Pou Ārahi Māori will support the lift in cultural capability across the organisation to enable and support educationally powerful connections.

Mō Te Mahau Te Tai Runga – About Te Tai Runga

Our new, regionally tailored focus includes three frontline groups who collectively provide leadership and integrated services to the sector and others. As Pou Ārahi Māori Te Tai Runga You will work alongside the Hautū Te Tai Runga and report directly to Hautū (Deputy Secretary) Te Tuarongo and be a part of the group’s Leadership team.

Te Tai Runga (South) region includes Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, Chatham Islands, Otago and Southland. The Pou Ārahi Te Tai Runga will ideally be based in one of the areas this region.

The Pou Ārahi Te Tai Runga will be part of a collective Pou Ārahi Māori leadership team, who will work in a connected way, maximising each other’s strengths to achieve the most effective gains for Māori educational success, to support local, regional and national level.

Mō Te Tuarongo – About Te Tuarongo

Te Tuarongo, known previously as the Māori Education Group, aims to lift the capability across the Ministry to give practical effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi. Te Tuarongo navigates te ao Karauna and te ao Māori, so Te Tāhuhu can create space for Māori to exercise tino rangatiratanga and become a good kawanatanga partner. Integral to the purpose of Te Tuarongo, Pou Ārahi will connect and work with all parts of Te Whare o te Mātauranga, so we can transform our whare.

Mōu ake About you

This Pou Ārahi Māori role will suit those with both strategic leadership and commitment to Māori education success as Māori, fluency in te ao Māori, te reo Māori me ōna tikanga, and experience working at the interface of Crown-Māori and iwi relations. The Pou Ārahi Māori Te Tai Runga will be regionally focussed and will have intimate knowledge of local communities and regional contexts of Te Tai Runga (South).

You will bring the following:

  • Mātauranga Māori/ a-iwi perspectives
  • In-depth knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its articles, principles and policy and understanding of the Crown’s obligations
  • Expertise in the fields of Māori education and/or Māori development
