Job Description

Policy Officer Positions

Innovative Ministry requires a talented workforce who represents the diversity of Aotearoa.

Join a Ministry who draws strength from its diversity and inclusion.

  • Do you have a high level of cultural competency?
  • Past Advisory/Policy/Project management experience?
  • Opportunity to grow your skills within an innovative organisation with a significant presence in Aotearoa and overseas.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) acts in the world to make New Zealanders safer and more prosperous.

MFAT are committed to attracting suitable candidates who reflect the diversity of New Zealand and the communities they represent.  They invite applications from candidates who are able to bring to their workforce a diverse background, experience, skills and a cultural perspective.  In return, MFAT’s focus is on identifying leadership potential, providing opportunities for training and development, and flexible work options.

MFAT’s values are heavily aligned to their diversity and inclusion aspirations.  They drive the behaviours required to grow the diversity of their workforce and inclusiveness of their workplace.

MFAT aspire to achieve Impact for New Zealand every day and everywhere; demonstrating what they can achieve with diverse people and knowledge through Kotahitanga; building and using effective partnerships in a spirit of Manaakitanga; and showing Courage in their policy advice, diplomacy and organisational improvement.

The Foreign Policy Officer positions support the government in making decisions that affect New Zealand’s foreign affairs and trade with the rest of the world.  This includes delivering analytical and intellectual policy development and outcomes in support of the government’s objectives for New Zealand’s international relations.

The Development Officer positions are focused on international development or humanitarian action and an appreciation of the principles of development effectiveness, including programme and activity management.  You will apply your strong stakeholder/governance, customer/vendor and supplier experience to these positions.

Across both functions there are opportunities to travel and serve abroad in the diplomatic service.

These positions require you to bring together information and produce recommendations for courses of action, through a range of delivery mechanisms.  You will produce briefing documentation, including formal messages, briefs, submissions, cabinet papers and speech notes.  Researching, identifying and contributing to strategies, objectives and policies, you will be at ease with the ability to build strong relationships and collaborate with strategic partners and cast a continuous improvement lens across all that you do.

There are some baseline ‘must haves’ for the positions ie; New Zealand citizenship, the ability to be security cleared and a tertiary qualification but we actively encourage candidates who have the transferable skill sets, life experiences, specialist skills (such as languages) alongside a board generalist skills set to apply.

You will understand the machinery of government, the government decision making process and may have worked within a NGO, NFP, Government, Pacific or Iwi/Hapū led organisation in an advisory or policy/project management capacity.

An awareness of the affinity for the needs and aspirations of Māori and a commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are pre-requisite.  In addition, Te Reo me ona tikanga Māori, or ability to speak another language, such as a Pacific or an Asian language, would be highly advantageous to this position.

Reward, recognition, and ongoing support are guaranteed within this innovative and forward thinking organisation.  If you bring an authentic view of New Zealand’s place in the world, we welcome your tono.
