National Science Challenge – Challenge Co-Director (Tāngata Whenua)

Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities (BBHTC): Ko ngā wā kāinga hei whakamāhorahora

Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities Challenge is a 10 year national programme of research which has brought together the best of New Zealand’s research community, international experts, end users and stakeholders, under one banner. The programme aims to transform the way in which new homes are provided, current homes are improved, and New Zealand’s towns and cities are formed.

As such, the Challenge presents a real chance to make a significant difference to the lives of many New Zealanders and to promote, foster and build kaupapa Māori and Māori research outcomes.

Te āhua o Te Tūrunga – The nature of the position

This strategic co-leadership role has joint responsibility for achieving Challenge outcomes within the greater Te Tiriti framework.

The Challenge Co-Director (Tāngata Whenua) spearhead’s Tāngata Whenua outcomes, working alongside the Challenge Co-Director (Tāngata Tiriti) who is dedicated to Tāngata Tiriti outcomes. The Challenge Co-leaders reports to the Co-Chairs of the Challenge Governance Group.

This Challenge co-leadership role jointly fosters research excellence, research impact and connectedness across diverse stakeholder groups from researchers and governance groups, to iwi, hapū, and Māori organisations.

The Challenge Co-Directors are employed on behalf of the National Science Challenge by the Challenge contractor, BRANZ Ltd.

Ngā tino Pūkenga/Whēako – Key Skills and Experience

A sound understanding of the New Zealand Science System and the participants in this system is prerequisite to application. The ability to work in a co-leadership model, manage complex relationships and work across organisations to bring effective teams together to achieve outcomes is essential. An understanding of the New Zealand housing, building and construction sector will be valuable.

Knowledge, skills and experience for application include;

  • Outstanding research experience with supporting credentials and significant research mana and gravitas.
  • Strong research leadership and ability to drive forward and co-shape the overarching research framework and vision for others to work within and through a cultural lens.
  • Experience in developing and implementing cross disciplinary, multi-organisational research programmes.
  • Strong relationship management and facilitation skills with the ability to liaise with industry, stakeholders including iwi, hapū and Māori organisations, local and central government.
  • Experience and skills working within Te Tiriti partnership frameworks.
  • Track record of leadership of senior research relationships; alongside the ability to work with professional staff to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness of a collaborative research initiative.
  • Relevant post-graduate tertiary qualification.

Skills in Te Reo Māori and excellent application of tikanga and kawa Māori values are all required to perform the position.
