The Law School, which is part of AUT’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, is Aotearoa’s newest and arguably, its most contemporary – blending traditional legal education and focus on legal theory with a strong practical application. AUT law graduates are highly sought after by law firms, community organisations and other employers. Established in 2009, the School has grown significantly in size and stature. We have over 25 committed and passionate staff who are dedicated to providing an excellent learning experience for our incredibly diverse student community, whilst maintaining a focus on high-quality research that has genuine impact and makes significant ongoing contributions to Aotearoa’s policies and legal frameworks.  We focus on high quality, innovative teaching with authentic practice-based assessment and staircasing graduates through to postgraduate research. As a School, we are an open, collegial group and support the growth of our people.

The Role

We have a permanent, full-time opportunity for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer of Law to develop their career in teaching, research and service. We are particularly interested in applicants who would contribute to our teaching in any of the following areas: Contract, Torts, Public Law, Criminal Law or Trusts, Tikanga Māori.

We offer an excellent research environment, with generous research support. You will be expected to publish actively in your specialised field. Research is well supported within the School and the Faculty also offers a variety of contestable research funds. We embrace practice-led, as well as research-informed, approaches to teaching where the student experience is optimised. It is also expected that over time the successful candidate will seek external research funding, engage with government, business, the professions and the community, and contribute to School/Faculty activities. From time to time, you may be asked to teach on law courses outside the Law School.

Qualification:

  • A Post-graduate degree in law

Research and Scholarship:

  • Applicants will be committed to being research active and engaging in research informed teaching.
  • An early career academic will be able to demonstrate the capability to develop a strong research profile
  • More experienced candidates will already have a proven research track record with quality publications and ideally also success in external funding bids.

Teaching and Learning:

  • An early career academic will ideally have at least some tutoring or other teaching assistant experience.
  • More experienced candidates will have previous lecturing experience, evidence of curriculum development and ideally, experience supervising experience supervising post-graduate students.

In addition, knowledge and experience of Tikanga Māori would be advantageous.

Start Date:  As soon as possible and ideally by February 2023. Interviews are expected to take place in weeks commencing 18 and 25 July 2022.

Appointment level and salary will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
