The University of Otago has a commitment to undertake research that is transformative and beneficial for Maori communities. This includes research that increases understanding of te ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori and supports the University’s commitment to excellence in research.
As part of this commitment, the position of Kaiwhakatere Rakahau Māori was created to play a crucial role as the leader of Rakahau Māori within the Research and Enterprise Office and to create and sustain an inclusive research environment that is consistent with Māori aspirations and values.
In this position, you will also be responsible for the promotion of Māori research across the University community and, increase the capability of research staff to engage with Māori. You will also use your knowledge and understanding of te ao Māori to support the R&E operation in line with the goals lined out in the Māori Strategic Framework.
The Research and Enterprise Office (R&E) supports and assists researchers in the identification of funding opportunities, partnering with business, grant applications, and the establishment of research contracts. We work closely with academic staff, students and Otago Innovation Ltd (the University’s wholly-owned commercialisation arm) to foster a culture of enterprise and collaboration.
Your Skills and Experience
To be successful in this key role, you will ideally be PhD qualified, and have knowledge and understanding of the diversity of university research activity.
You will also be able to demonstrate:
- A robust understanding of Vision Mātauranga policy, Mātauranga Māori, the Treaty of Waitangi, Maori research methodologies and tikanga, and Te Ao Māori.
- E matatau ana ki te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Maori.
- Proven ability to plan and effectively manage a wide range of projects and clients simultaneously.
- The ability to interact effectively, tactfully and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals and, in particular, engage effectively with Māori communities.
- The ability to effectively promote the University’s research objectives and strategies across the University while gaining and maintaining the respect of academic staff.
- Knowledge, networks and familiarity with local and national Māori organisations.
