About the role

In the role of Manager Māori Relationships you will focus on providing robust specialist advice to enhance the organisations responsiveness to our obligations to Māori. You will guide the organisation in achieving Māori cultural capability and understanding and will support all areas of Council to work with mana whenua and Māori.

You will manage a small team that provides guidance and assistance from a Māori perspective on policy and strategy development. Your team will lead research, collection and analysis of information on the social, cultural, environmental, and economic needs of Māori, whanau, hapū, iwi to help deliver improved outcomes and achieve Council’s statutory responsibilities.

Success in this role will require excellent working relationships with key corporate groups and business groups across the organisation. You will engage directly with Councillors and the Executive Leadership Team and with territorial authority peers in the region and nationwide and in central government agencies. You will lead the organisation’s approach to working with mana whenua and Māori. You will establish effective working relationships with mana whenua and Māori representatives, and will work in partnership to enhance understanding of Council business and operations.

You will lead and guide Council in helping grow our cultural capability from a Māori perspective on policy and development issues. You’re proven skills in working across competing cultural world views, and bringing those worlds closer together is a prerequisite. Your ability to operate effectively with a high level of diplomacy, remain neutral, and provide unbiased, well founded advice is a cornerstone to your operational capability for this role.

It is ideal if you have:

  • Fluency in Te Reo me ona tikanga Māori
  • Experience in central or local government context and understands the pressures facing local government.
