Ko wai mātou – Who are we
Hoani Waititi Marae is an urban marae based in West Auckland opened in 1980 and is governed by the Hoani Waititi Marae Charitable Trust.
The name comes in honour of Hoani Retimana Waititi, descendant of Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Kauaetangohia. The marae continues to honour his legacy through the formation of Kōhanga reo, Kura Kaupapa Māori and Whare Kura along with its partnership with NZMA (New Zealand Management Academy) in trade training. One aspiration of the trust is to develop and onsite Whare Wananga.

Te āhua o Te Tūranga – The nature of the position
The next stage of Hoani Waititi Marae! The Trust is now looking to progress its vision, increasing the Hoani Waititi Marae economic base, and aspirations for its future. We are seeking to attract an experienced General Manager (GM) to advance the set course, with the direct intent to establish the organisation as a World leader in the Indigenous space.
The overarching purpose of this position is to action the Trust strategic plan, have the capability to achieve the outcomes and confidently provide operational leadership. The position requires the depth of understanding of Māori political landscapes, iwi leadership and Māori representation.
Build and maintain effective relationships with key marae internal and external stakeholders. Bring your own established networks to initiate, build and maintain a broad range of strategic relationships and networks both within and outside the marae to influence and inform others.
To explore and encourage innovative revenue streams which benefit the economic stability of the marae and their benefactors.
Ngā tino Pūkenga/Whēako – Essential skills/experiences for the role
Naturally, you will have an established, understanding, knowledge and use of Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga. A tertiary degree in a relevant field is highly desirable, however equivalent knowledge, skills and experience may negate this. The skills, experience and attitude required are commensurate with the seniority of this position:
- Previous GM, or similar level experience with extensive strategic planning and reporting knowledge.
- Significant people leadership experience, evidencing sound leadership, management and mentoring of staff.
- Financial, contract and project management expertise, adapt at providing financial performance against budget.
- Risk identification and mitigation capability, and skilled in understanding market trends.
- A humble wairua and empathetic focus of change and its effect on people.
- Knowledge of Te Reo me ōna Māori.
- Skilled in conducting business via both strategic and operational lenses.
- Strong business acumen and a political neutrality.
- The proven ability to partner with stakeholders to advise, influence and change behaviour.
- Comfortable and highly adaptive within change-based environments.
- The experience to effectively manage internal and external stakeholders through advocacy, negotiation, and collaboration.
- Experience in the project management, financial reporting, and business plans.
A culturally astute and agile leader, the GM will be able to temperature check in with staff, understanding grass roots issues, and be able to pivot to work in with the Board and other senior stakeholders who are internal and external to the organisation. This role is positioned to attract high calibre of skill set and relevant experience.
