Be an integral component leading and implementing a growth strategy to secure the ongoing wellbeing of Kahukuraariki – Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa.

Kahukuraariki Trust is a Post Settlement Group within Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa. The Trust assets primarily consist of farming, land, equity investments with a current value in excess of $20 million.
The Kahukuraariki Trustee’s aim is to promote the educational, spiritual, economic, social and cultural advancement of present and future members of Kahukuraariki – Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa to provide for the ongoing maintenance and establishment of places of cultural and spiritual significance to Kahukuraariki – Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa and its members. Alongside the promotion of the general health and wellbeing of Kahukuraariki – Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa and its members, the focus is on undertaking commercial activities to support the object and purpose of the Trust.
This innovative Trust is seeking to further prosper from the skills and expertise of a highly experienced General Manager who will provide strategic direction, innovation, and commercial acumen to develop economic opportunities. Translating the Trust’s vision and concepts into strategies that progress the organisation, this position will be highly fiscally weighed, with robust elements of financial risk evaluation, modelling, and reporting. Monitoring and managing investment strategies via robust analysis, accuracy, and financial pragmatism, to drive the strategic goals and direction on economic development to work in partnership with the Board.
The role of the General Manager will be to deliver strategic leadership and direction, working in partnership with the Board, and responsibility for overall organisational success. Demonstrating superior operating skills; financial acumen; and the ability to manage risk; the General Manager will have the means to formulate a plan of action and execute it swiftly and decisively. Setting a clear strategic intent, you have the personal mana to take people on your journey, bringing differing viewpoints and strongly held beliefs and agendas together. Presenting persuasive arguments and maintaining poise under questioning, you will be clear on your objectives and how to influence others to achieve desired outcomes with empathy and understanding. Key to your success will be your ability to gain trust and maintain beneficial relationships to promote and advance the aims of the organisation.
You will nurture partnerships, having accountability for the development, implementation, and evaluation strategies to ensure the Trusts interests are advanced and protected. You will be adept at making decisions that are financially responsible, accountable, justifiable, through a long-term lens. It is expected your cultural proficiency will guide and nurture you, as you traverse this wide-ranging, newly created General Manager position.
Expertise, knowledge, and experience required for application are to include:
- A degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related discipline.
- Prudent fiscal skills – commercial finance and compliance experience.
- Experience in a senior leadership role – preferability within a Māori organisation.
- Expert commercial acumen.
- Prior experience in working with or reporting to a governance or Trust Board.
- Business and project development experience.
- Strategy and business and planning management.
- The demonstrated ability as a people influencer – a strong and proud leader able to take people on your journey.
- Iwi resource management exposure.
- Proficiency in Te Reo me ona tikanga Māori.
- An awareness and affinity for the needs and aspirations of Māori
- Extensive people, relationship, and stakeholder management skills.
- Skilled in presenting budgets, audits, and compliance data to Board level.
- Strong people influencer and people leader abilities.
Cognisant of the boundaries between governance and management, you will have a strong working knowledge of legislation and regulations. Effectively managing communication between all key stakeholders, the General Manager will lead the implementation of the Trust’s planning, reporting, and monitoring obligations and will manage the day to day administration of the organisation. A highly strategic position, encompassing the design and oversight of the strategy for the Trust, and ensuring the appropriate support and resources are implemented to deliver on the agreed strategic objectives. Facilitating the interactions of all required stakeholders will ensure all viewpoints are expressed and considered, with any resultant proposals or discussion document being robustly presented to the Board.
Your solid comprehension of how an organisation creates and sustains its financial resources, what drives profitability and a market-focused approach to business, coupled with a long-term view of what is important to the people of Kahukuraariki – Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa will be highly valued.
