The newly created position of Māori Advisor – Community Health will support the implementation of the Māori Strategy plan within Community Health Services. Supporting organisational managers and teams to improve engagement with local Iwi, hapū and key external parties – specifically Whānau Ora and Te Puna Kōkiri, this position will see you building partnerships and initiatives for community health services initiatives with a specific area of focus. Youth development of marae based rangatahi programmes, St John in schools, Māori modules and the development of community health transport in Māori communities are a snapshot of a broad range of programmes that you will hold accountability and leadership for.
Collaborating with and supporting the Māori network and advisory group, you will assist in the development and delivery of training to community health staff and teams on both the Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its implications for St John in a health context to increase awareness and understanding. Advising, coaching and supporting staff on appropriate Māori protocols so as to build cultural competency within the team and St John. Working side by side with community health, clinical operations and wider organisational groups, you will take a lead position in the development and delivery of initiatives that enhance Māori health.
Prerequisites of the position are to include:
- Well established networks, credibility and relationships with iwi and Māori
- Prior experience within a health or community focused position.
- Ability to operate effectively in a Māori cultural setting and proven understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
- The demonstrated ability as a people influencer; the capability to build trust and lead others on a journey.
- Te Reo knowledge and modelling of tikanga Māori within a mainstream environment.
- Experience in development, delivery and facilitation of training modules and focus groups.
- Proven ability to manage and deliver programmes and projects on time and to budget.
- Extensive people leadership experience with the skills to lead, coach, motivate and challenge.
- Able to work independently to identify options and make recommendations.
- The demonstrated ability as a people influencer.
- High levels of computer and written literacy.
The ability to identify cultural perspectives challenge views – lead others to value and respect alternative cultural perspectives will require mana, and sound people influencing abilities. With the skill to lead real partnership approaches, to build, maintain and enhance organisational activities, the interests of members, managers, communities and tāngata whenua, you will be able to work within the communities of learning particularly focused on iwi and tapping into their ability to support achievement and challenges at a local level.
This hugely dynamic and diverse position will expose you to a wide range of issues requiring critical thinking and strong relationship skills. This creates opportunities to develop and influence new ways of operating, and to drive better, long-term outcomes for Māori. Reporting to the Director of Community Health Services, you will utilise your understanding and knowledge of Māori protocol and culture, to provide cultural coaching, advice and support to the senior members of the organisation.
A qualification in Te Ao Māori or Te Reo Māori is desirable, although not mandatory.
