Kaitakawaenga Māori – Iwi Liaison Officer
A new and highly pivotal position has come to market for a Kaitakawaenga Māori – Iwi Liaison Officer. The intent of this position is to facilitate partnerships with Mana Whenua, and to promote collaborative and positive engagement with Māori to effectively deliver council services and activities.
The Kaitakawaenga Māori delivers cultural and strategic advice and support to elected members, staff, the executive leadership team, and council officers to create and maintain respectful relationships with Mana Whenua. The strategic intent is to encourage, support and lead Council wide training on Te Ao Māori, Te Reo, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and tikanga Māori. Create a sustainable and practical framework to enable and grow cultural organisational capability, with the end result seeing all of Council engaging appropriately with Māori.
Supporting the development and implementation of strategic management frameworks and core organisational planning, you will support community engagement and consultation processes with Iwi to inform and support planning and policy decisions and Council projects. Accountable for the development of a Māori focused policy; you will support the strategic engagement pre-Treaty settlement on behalf of Council and the implementation of the obligations of Council post-Treaty settlement.
Supporting and co-facilitating mihi whakatau/pōwhiri and other protocols for internal and civic events, you will activity contribute and collaborate to ensure that tikanga Māori is incorporated into event planning. Providing advice and support through a cultural lens to the Iwi Governance Committee, you will undertake research and analysis to support decisions and initiatives, and report on current affairs and Council business providing guidance and advice on new issues as they arise.
Qualifications, experience and skills required include:
- Proficiency in Te Reo me ona tikanga.
- A qualification or the equivalent significant experience in Te Reo Māori.
- Proven ability to identify, develop and deliver Te Reo Māori, cultural awareness and Te Tiriti o Waitangi training programmes.
- Knowledge and practical application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Experienced in development of policy and strategic management frameworks as they relate to Māori.
- A skill set that will ensure cultural perspectives are reflected in all business practices.
- Highly developed networking, and relationship building skills.
- Strong political awareness.
