Job Description

Based in Hastings, Gisborne, Hamilton, Rotorua, Tauranga, Opotiki or Wairoa

Fixed-Term (15 February – 17 December 2021)

Full time and part time hours available

  • Keen to engage and support ākonga (students) with their education?
  • Keen to work with ākonga to empower them to become engaged and contributing members of their communities?
  • Want to be part of a supportive, collaborative and innovative culture?

The Ministry of Education has provided additional funding for Te Kura to support learners already at risk of disengagement, who are likely to be disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 disruptions. This funding is provided until the end of the 2021 school year to support these ākonga to re-engage with their learning, and/or to successfully transition on to further education, training or employment.

Te Kura has set up an Enhanced Engagement and Wellbeing project to support these ākonga. The project includes new Kaiāwhina roles working directly with ākonga, including a high proportion of Māori and Pacific learners. In the Kaiāwhina role you will work as part of a team to improve outcomes for these ākonga.

Te Kura’s vision is to enable our ākonga to achieve their educational and personal goals, empowering them to become engaged and contributing members of their communities.

We have vacancies for Kaiawhina to join the Central North Region team, based in one of these locations: Hastings, Gisborne, Hamilton, Rotorua, Opotiki or Wairoa

As Kaiawhina, you will:

  • Support in-region staff (i.e. Kaimanaaki, Kaiako, Kaitautoko, Liaison Teachers and Kaituitui) to engage ākonga(students) in meaningful ‘kanohi ki te kanohi’ learning experiences.
  • Mentor, motivate, encourage, and support ākonga, individually and in small groups, as ākonga engage in learning activities.

We are looking for people with excellent interpersonal skills and an inclusive approach, able to quickly build rapport and trust with ākonga. You will be expected to be aware of the health and safety requirements for working with ākonga outside the classroom and comply with the school’s policies at all times. Knowledge and experience of Tikanga and Te Reo Māori is an advantage.

If this sounds like you, and you are looking to join a forward thinking, innovative organisation, apply now!

Listen to Mike Hollings our Chief Executive, talk about the school and check out our 360 Virtual Tours.
