Mō te Tari o te Kaitiaki Mana Tangata – About the Office of the Ombudsman
As an independent Officer of Parliament, the Chief Ombudsman works to ensure people are treated fairly, primarily in relation to the administrative conduct of public sector agencies. As part of his role, the Chief Ombudsman monitors and inspects places of detention for cruel and inhuman treatment, including in private sector aged care facilities. The inspection of private sector aged care facilities is a new role that we are developing over the next three years. Mō te tūranga – About the role
The role of Inspector OPCAT is to assist the Chief Ombudsman to monitor and inspect places of detention. You’ll be a member of a new team focused primarily on inspecting and monitoring the treatment of people in aged care facilities. You’ll carry out inspections, gather evidence and contribute to reports and recommendations. You’ll be travelling across New Zealand with other staff on a regular basis, sometimes for up to a week at a time.
He kōrero mōu – About you
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A relevant tertiary qualification and experience in a legal, medical, social work, cultural or education field.
- An understanding of relevant national and international law, standards and best practice.
- An understanding of and ability to recognise and understand key Māori, disability, and other cultural and human rights concepts.
- Experience in visiting or working in a place of detention, such as health and disability units, aged care facilities or prison facilities.
- An understanding of current detention facility practice, the context in which they operate and the challenges they face.
- Experience in undertaking evidence based research and analysis, including conducting interviews and site visits to obtain key information.
All shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a writing test as part of the selection process. The successful appointee must have a legal entitlement to work in New Zealand and may be required to achieve and maintain a NZ government (NZSIS) security clearance and complete a police check.
Depending on skills and experience, the salary for this position will likely be between $80,000 and $104,000.
