Mō te tūnga | The role

We have an exciting opportunity for the right person as the Director – Te Ao Maori, a role that is integral to the leadership of the Census and Collection Operations leadership team, to ensure Māori perspectives and Te Tiriti are front and centre in our approaches and are incorporated in the way we engage and deliver for and with our customers and stakeholders.

A key priority for the position is the 2023 Census Programme and enabling the Census programme to work with and for Māori.  Your role, as steward of Te Rautaki Māori – the Census Māori Strategy -guides the Census programme to achieve its primary goal of increasing the value and use of data for and about Māori, through increased Māori participation in the census.

You will also work with the Collection Operations leadership team to establish an effective approach to engaging with Maori in the communities we collect data from and apply learnings from the 2023 Census Programme.

Starting salary: $180,00 – $200,000 negotiable

What are we looking for?

  • Demonstrated experience in building relationships with Māori and iwi communities, government agencies and all levels of government (e.g. local, regional, national).
  • Have solid working knowledge of a broad range of processes related to the operations of the public sector and government
  • Experienced in the implementation and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to deliver equitable outcomes with and for Māori and the expectations of government under the Treaty
  • A champion of te reo and tikanga Māori in the workplace, on a day-to-day working level
  • Known for setting clear strategy and direction, and for remaining on track in the event of a crisis or other significant disruption
  • Comfort working with, leading and promoting data, including improving its use and availability to support decision making.
  • Track record of success as a people leader, with a breadth of relevant industry experience, Includes capability and record of effectively managing a Māori or first nations people function, driving action and continuous improvement
  • Understanding partnering and co-design
  • Understand the wider context within Statistics NZ including Māori data frameworks
  • Be intellectually, analytically and conceptually agile and experienced in dealing with complex matters
