We offer a stimulating teaching and research environment with strong connections to government, business and industry.  AUT has over 29,000 students and around 3000 staff across our three teaching campuses and is located in New Zealand’s (NZ’s) largest city, Auckland – consistently ranked as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

Become the Dean of our Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences

We are seeking a visionary new Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor to provide outstanding strategic, academic and people leadership as the head of our Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, guiding it through a period of regeneration as we aim to be one of Australasia’s pre-eminent Health faculties. The Faculty already provides more degree educated clinical professionals to NZ’s health sector than any other medical or health school in the country, and this is the perfect time to join and make hugely significant academic and cultural impact. You will lead a team of 11 direct reports and approximately 580 (FTE) deeply passionate, committed Faculty staff who are focussed on strengthening and enhancing the student experience, and contributing meaningful high-quality knowledge advance and research in health, science and sports science. We’re open to exploration and adventurous approaches in what we’re prepared to try to take us to the next level – innovation and experimentation is embraced.

Key focus areas include:

  • Fostering excellence and support in faculty teaching, scholarship, research and collaboration across the schools and research centres. Building greater integrated academic practice with outward reach and focus, while increasing the number of faculty research active staff.
  • Establishing an inclusive, positive faculty culture that reflects the university’s values – and taking the required measures to achieve high staff engagement.
  • Increasing participation in Health courses from Māori and Pacific students, and development of the Māori and Pacific workforce in health, science and sports science and tertiary education.
  • Lifting the Faculty’s external profile and ensuring strong personal networking across New Zealand’s Health and Health related sectors.
  • Driving greater connection and collaboration across the university, including more open curriculum.

You will be a key part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive, the University’s Senior Leadership Team and a member of various University bodies such as Academic board. This role enables significant freedom and autonomy and embraces energy and ideas to make things happen. You will be recognised as an effective academic leader emphasising the importance of humanity in Health and education, critically displaying attributes of tolerance, empathy, trustworthiness, confidence and kindness.

Your ability to listen, connect, collaborate, communicate and influence will be critical – as is your level of strong respect for others coupled with an open and engaging attitude that is flexible to changing requirements. You’ll enhance the positive energy within the University, value diversity and work inclusively. A resolute, robust and positive attitude is essential.
