CEO – Hokotehi Moriori Trust 

Embark on a journey of a lifetime, setting the future course of this Trust and for the Moriori people.

  • Position split between Rēkohu – Chatham Islands, and Mainland NZ.

The Hokotehi Moriori Trust (HMT) is a tribal trust based on Rēkohu – Chatham Islands.  Representing the indigenous Moriori people, the Trust is setting the strategic direction of the organisation, and revitalising Moriori culture and identity via the re-education of present and future generations about Moriori culture and history, that is designed to ensure that Moriori, as a separate and distinct indigenous culture of Aotearoa/New Zealand, is not lost to this country.

HMT is asset rich; owning two sheep and cattle farms, a tourism lodge facility, several properties; fishing assets and a stunning Marae complex. Currently settling historical Treaty claims with the Crown, the Trust comprises of over 1800 registered members and 10 staff members. Restoration of the heritage, identity and culture of Moriori and building the cultural capacity of the people is of fundamental importance to the kaupapa of the organisation.

The position is located on Chatham Islands; 800km east of New Zealand. It is a community of 600 people and is blessed with beautiful landscapes, seascapes and wide-open spaces www.moriori.co.nz

The CEO position is a comprehensive role, with a broad spectrum of management, leadership and strategic accountabilities. The objective is to deliver a robust strategic leadership direction, and in partnership with the Board, be accountable for overall organisational success. In addition; demonstrating superior operating skills; financial acumen; the ability to manage risk and excellent people management skills; and the means to formulate a plan of action and execute it swiftly and decisively – while taking into account the unique way in which business is done on Rēkohu.  Your career will have been founded on credibility, a proven track record and hands-on leadership involvement in the organisations in which you’ve spearheaded.

You will be able to identify the financial impact of suggested proposals, events and outcomes, focussed on balancing income and expenditure throughout the year, whilst being cognisant of the requirement to closely monitor expenditure and income flows.

Key accountabilities of the position are to include; 

  • Translating vision and concepts into strategic and operational plans.
  • Oversight of day to day staff and operational management, planning, reporting, financial, and leadership.
  • Assuming a leading management role in various Moriori fishing interests and ventures
  • Working closely with the property manager ensuring properties are regularly maintained and meet compliance standards.
  • Supporting the farm manager to ensure farms remain profitable.
  • Support and guidance for the manager at Henga Lodge.
  • Engaging and interacting effectively across the community.
  • The review of current strategies, and development of new opportunities.
  • Developing and implementing annual business planning and refreshing existing reporting frameworks.
  • The promotion of a high-performance culture of ownership and accountability.
  • Providing support to the board including high quality, accurate information, risk and gap analysis.
  • Leading strategy, direction and goals, overseeing the day to day operations and functions of the Trust.
  • Leading, and developing organisational cultural capacity.

You will assist and support with Treaty of Waitangi issues as they relate to Rēkohu, in particular assisting with finalising and implementation of the settlement of the historical Moriori claims against the Crown.

Rēkohu and Rangihaute, and associated islands have high environmental values, are vulnerable and contain many rare and endangered species.  You will ensure the Trust maintains a strong leadership role in conservation initiatives on these islands.

Significant is your ability to lead with mana and have an exceptional cultural competency which will allow you to strengthen existing partnerships and stakeholder interests.  Awareness and an affinity for the needs and aspirations of the indigenous Moriori people and a commitment to Moriori tikane – and the interest to expand your learning are pre-requisite.

Skills, expertise and competencies of the position are to include;  

  • The proven ability in a CEO or GM position, as a visionary and strategic thinker.
  • Non-profit/indigenous organisational acumen.
  • Exceptional financial acumen, budget and capital allocation experience, the proven skill set to provide accurate and timely reporting of all financial results and issues to the Board.
  • Able to deal with concepts and complexity comfortably; intellectually sharp, capable and agile.
  • The demonstrated ability as a people influencer, leader and trusted advisor.
  • Experience in the translation of strategy into operational success.
  • Proven relationship management and expert communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively create and implement strategies, drive and manage change.
  • A strong track record in operational management.
  • Confidence and experienced in media relations.
  • Prior skills in strategic and financial planning, the production of annual budgets forecasting and risk analysis.
  • The ability to provide oversight of day to day operational management, planning, reporting, financial and staff management.
  • The efficient management of budgets, work programmes and contracts.
  • Skilled in the presentation budgets, audits and compliance data to board level.

Ensuring there is a clear brand in the public arena, you will supervise the management of the Trusts public image, communications and profile and brand, ensuring all creative concepts, designs and advertisements positively reflect the profile and brand as set out in the strategic plan.

As a current leader within business, and within the communities you operate in you will have the mana and tikane to bring your team together and lead and foster a centralised way of working, one which harness change and drives cultural values at its core.

A competitive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant including salary, accommodation, and use of a vehicle, relocation and travel allowances. There are no secondary schools on Rēkohu.
