This is an exciting opportunity for a Campus Store Manager to join the Retail & Catering team on a permanent basis here at the University of Auckland.

A core part of this role will be accountable for the day to day operations of the Campus Store, located in the University Quad. This will involve hands-on sales and customer service, managing stock and point of sales functionality, plus the supervision of part-time or casual staff.

Beyond the Campus Store duties, you’ll also be an important part of the Retail & Catering team, leading the co-ordination of pop-up retail activities to bring incremental variety and vibrancy on campus.

Reporting to the Retail & Catering Manager, and working closely with the Retail Operations Manager, you will be part of a small but highly focused team who work hard to ensure students and stakeholders across the University can enjoy terrific retail services. Challenges and issues are managed with a positive commercial approach, alongside an equally important need to deliver high levels of choice and customer service..


About you | He kōrero mōu

You will need to have a great mix of customer service and commercial skills. You’ll need to use your initiative, and work both independently as well as part of a team.

You will bring a highly organised approach to your work, being able to effectively plan and prioritise your duties. You’ll be comfortable working with numbers and details, as the role involves close liaison with numerous suppliers and retailers to ensure that obligations and standards set out in our contracts are consistently met.

You’ll also have a sense of creativity and foresight in identifying opportunities to help meet our goals for the overall retail experience. Part of your duties will be to co-ordinate a programme of temporary retail activity on-campus, which will involve sourcing new retail offers and liaising with various stakeholders to bring the programme to life.

You will be highly confident in stakeholder management with demonstrably strong interpersonal skills. The role requires you to work closely and effectively with multiple stakeholders, both internal and external to the University.

Important Skills | Nga Pūkenga Motuhake

  • A number of years commercial experience, ideally from a retail/hospitality/events background.
  • Excellent customer relationship management skills and the ability to engage and influence a variety of stakeholders.
  • Proven positive experience and achievements in a complex environment, including experience working co-operatively in a busy team.
  • High level of competence with Microsoft Office applications. Experience with point of sales systems would be advantageous.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills combined with a proven acumen around financial data and reporting, and ideally management of contracts
