Te āhua o Te Tūrunga – The nature of the position:

The intent of this newly created position is to is to assist and support with the running of the CoastCare programme, with a specific focus on relationships with iwi and hapū, working alongside them to build and expand coastal kaitiaki programmes within the region.

The CoastCare programme involves Northland Regional Council (NRC) partnering with local community, iwi, hapū, district councils and Department of Conservation to protect and restore Northland’s coastal environment for their biodiversity values and protective function.  A core part of this role will involve working with iwi and hapū to support their efforts as kaitiaki to restore and protect the unique and fragile coastal environment. There is also a very strong advocacy and education component to the role – promoting the cultural, biodiversity and coastal hazard mitigation values of coastal ecosystems across council and wider audiences.

By working in a direct and hands on capacity with iwi and hapū, you will be supporting their kaitiaki aspirations for the protection and restoration of the coastal environment. Forming critical relationships, you will help ensure council is well informed of Māori perspectives on protection of coastal ecosystems. Developing relationships and networks with iwi, hapū and whānau, amongst other groups, will also provide realisation of Council’s obligations under the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Assisting the CoastCare Co-ordinator to support more than 30 community CoastCare groups around the region as well as working with iwi and hapū, you will spend large amounts of time in the field, being flexible with your working times when required. Organising and attending community and school events, such as planting days, hui and workshops, will be part of your BAU. Additionally, you’ll work with the NRC Communications team to inform and promote key messages through various channels, including pānui, pamphlets, NRC website, social media, and newsletters.

Ideally you will have already gained coastal restoration experience , and as such be able to provide high quality Mātauranga Māori and science-based technical advice to council and communities on coastal processes and management of dune vegetation, dune geomorphology, coastal processes and other factors affecting management of these resources. As a BAU function, you will also be responding to information requests, writing restoration plans and recommendations, this may also include providing expert advice and evidence for enforcement actions.

Ngā tino Pūkenga/Wheako – Essential skills/experiences for the role:

Knowledge of Te Taitokerau iwi, communities and coastal areas is required for application, with additional knowledge and relevant experience in Mātauranga Māori.

A relevant degree qualification in Coastal Science or Resource Management is not perquisite, although advantageous. All applicants must be able to display significant cultural competency, driven by their own personal mana and passion to bring about change.

Skills, knowledge, and experience required for application include:

  • Knowledge of Mātauranga Māori, and practical application of principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Sound knowledge of te reo me ōna tikanga.
  • Experience in building hapū kaitiaki engagement.
  • Ability to engage and operate at the interface between western science and Te Ao Māori.
  • Good knowledge of coastal processes including a sound understanding of coastal dune form and function.
  • Able to build and sustain effective relationships with a broad range of people and groups, demonstrating cultural awareness and empathy.
  • Adaptable attitude and ability to learn and carry out a variety of tasks using a range of skills.
  • Well organised and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft applications.
  • Full driver’s licence, capable of working in the field and able to work flexible hours.
  • Understanding of Te Reo Māori and extensive knowledge of tikanga Māori.
  • Ability to clearly impart information verbally and in written form to non-specialists.
  • The experience to effectively manage internal and external stakeholders through advocacy, negotiation, and collaboration, with the ability to influence, persuade and inspire others.
  • Able to demonstrate the proven ability to work collaboratively to develop and maintain highly effective relationships.
  • The proven skills to empower and uplift the mana of others.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, with the ability to influence and enable.

The aim is to journey together, keeping communication channels highly proactive, being able to temperature check and be responsive to concerns and represent these views to Council. This unique position will call to individuals who can authentically engage and is able to demonstrate and promote the value of tikanga Māori in a humble and uplifting way.
