Job Description

Ko te whare Pūtaiao | The Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland is the leading science faculty in New Zealand and one of the largest in Australasia and undertakes world-class research across the physical, biological and computational sciences.

Te Kura Mātai Hinengaro | The School of Psychology covers a broad range of study and research, answering questions ranging from evolution to language, and from neuroscience to mental health. Research in the School of Psychology is focused in areas such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, child development, learning, and psychological and developmental disabilities.

The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

We are currently looking for an experienced Animal Research Lab Technician to join the Technical Services Team on a part time (0.5FTE) permanent basis.

You will be responsible in maintaining the health and welfare of animals used for teaching and research purposes within the Experimental Analysis of Behaviour Research Group (EABRG) lab predominately within avian research.

You will also provide assistance to other staff and graduate students within the School of Psychology where animal research is carried out, including field work when required.

About the team | Mō tō mātou rōpū

The Faculty of Science’s Technical Services Team comprises over 100 technical staff providing specialist support to the Faculty’s academic staff and students across 9 of the 10 Departments. They contribute technical knowledge and expertise to research and teaching activities while ensuring the ongoing operation and compliance of a vast range of laboratories, workshops, teaching facilities, research equipment, vehicles and boats.

Qualifications

About you | He kōrero mōu

Our ideal candidate will be tertiary qualified in animal husbandry or a related field (e.g. Animal Welfare, Veterinary Nursing)

Important Skills | Nga Pūkenga Motuhake

  • Minimum of  1-2 years handling and husbandry experience with birds
  • Sound knowledge of avian health and welfare
  • Excellent communication skills
  • High level of computer/technological literacy is required
  • Valid Drivers license
